Time For God: Day 27

Written by Paul Beckingham
Focus: Psalm 132:7:
Let us go into His tabernacle; let us worship at His footstool.
Reflect:
He built a house for God, a sanctuary where he worshipped. In Nairobi, the owner of the car repair shop invited me to join in prayer. He led me up the steep stairs to a small room. I didn’t know what I’d find. It intrigued me. The Tabernacle, it was not.
On the walls hung several small, wooden structures. Each one was about the size of a birds’ nesting box. Flowers and candles, seeds and unwrapped candies decorated the boxes. He had carefully placed his offerings to the Hindu gods within.
Seeing my look of consternation he raised a gentle smile. “Don’t worry,” he said, “I have made one for Jesus. You can worship him here.” Putting God in a box took on new meaning for me in that moment. The Living God’s tight cage seemed to be restrictively small. I was curious. Can small coops ever cramp the Lord of Creation?
The psalmist picks up King David’s story. David plans to build a house for God (2 Samuel 7). On a grand scale he offers to build Israel its first Temple. God refuses his ambitious plan. God gives that honour to a non-warrior—Solomon, David’s son.
Meantime, God calls worshippers to meet Him in the Tabernacle. The ark of God dwells inside tent curtains (7:2). A desert tent hardly compares to the glory of King David’s cedar-panelled palace. Yet, God reveals He is present in even lowly places. The Spirit of God moves freely where He will; He leads His Pilgrim people forward.
What about that bird-box built for Jesus? The Saviour of the World is not a hostage in a Nairobi auto-shop. Nothing will restrict His redeeming love for a broken world. His Spirit freely leads you forward on your journey of faith; follow where He leads.
Let us go into His tabernacle; let us worship at His footstool. Your world is God’s footstall. Bow before Him where you are. God is not confined; His Spirit freely finds you. Make your heart His home; open the door—invite Him in. Nothing separates you from His relentless love. The Lord of Life is with you. Welcome Him, today.
Consider:
How have your ideas of what God should be doing for you limited your view of who He truly is? When has God broken through a bird-box size theology to embrace you with His infinite love? Who might step into your story if you share with them, today?
Pray:
Limitless God, King of Love, wooer of my soul, I praise You. You reside not within the limited scope of my plans, projects and perceptions. Open my eyes to the majesty of Your Sovereign glory. I fall before the splendor of Your Holy Presence. I worship You in spirit and in truth. Hallelujah! What a Savior! Visit me again. Amen and Amen.
