Time For God: Day 6

Written by Paul Beckingham

Focus: Pslam 122:1
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.”

Reflect:

He didn’t call it the house of the Lord. But it truly was. He asked, “Would you like to come to Sunday School?” I answered affirmatively; he slowly shook his head. He said, “Well, on one condition… First you must go home and wash. You’re filthy!”

My mother had gone out to buy cigarettes a couple of weeks earlier. She never returned. She left me as a nine-year old, together with my brother (eight), in the astonished care of our schizophrenic great aunt.

It was winter. Frost glazed the windows inside our bedroom. A double length pillow, a bolster, lay between us in the large brass-framed bed I shared with my brother. It was a vain attempt to stop us fighting. One night, we heard music in the street. It was unlike anything we had ever heard. Pulling on clothes over our pajamas we ventured into the street. A small Salvation Army Band shivered under the light of a gas-fired street lamp. Like angels in navy-blue uniforms they played heaven’s music.

We accepted that invitation. Every Sunday the same man collected us to take us to Sunday School. Afterwards, we went to his home. There we joined his young family in the only home-cooked meal we ate each week.

Later, the story of Easter – a cross, a crown, and comforting hope – made the love of Jesus real to me. Kneeling at the Mercy Seat, an old wooden bench at the front of the small Sunday School room, I received Jesus as my Savior and Lord.

My life was forever changed. My heart was wooed by the forgiveness, mercy, and grace, of God. A brand new start was won for me, and for you, by the Savior’s crucified love. Only a kneeling heart receives it.

Those hearts say with certainty, I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go into the house of the Lord.” I’m rather less certain of ever having washed before I got there.

Consider:
How has Jesus shown His love in your life? What does it mean to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior? What is your unique story of God’s in-breaking love? How can you share your story with someone, today?

Pray:
Hallelujah! What a Savior! Lord you have picked me up from the mud, washed me, and forgiven me. You set my feet on the rock of your salvation. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Show me today the person that waits to hear my story. Amen.
