Time For God: Day 1

Written by Paul Beckingham

Psalm 120:1-2:
In my distress I cried to the Lord, and He heard me. Deliver my soul, O Lord, from lying lips and from a deceitful tongue.

The realtor’s advertisement looked lovely. Pictures of the cottage showed cute rooms and cozy spaces. It exactly matched the kind of vacation cottage my wife and I had dreamed of owning. Our hopes rose high. With smiles, we embarked on a ferry ride to an island where the property nestled in the sun. The realtor met us with a happy greeting and drove us to the property.

Upon arrival, a scene of utter contrast met our downcast gaze. Thistles carpeted the ground beneath an overcast sky. Moss covered gloomy cedar roof shakes. Green patches crept along the deck’s worn and weathered wood. Slimy mould made the slippery surfaces hazardous underfoot. Siding lifted away from walls where squirrels made their home. Our hearts sank.
Those pictures in the realtor’s paper were taken 25-years ago. We felt foolish. Unable to engage in further conversation, the realtor drove us silently to the ferry terminal. We returned home crestfallen. We felt deceived.

In this psalm, David grasps two truths. First, in a broken world deceit abounds. It  creates deep distress. Second, when you turn to God He delivers you. He brings you to a place of peace. God’s presence is safe. He provides for you. He wraps you in His care. The Lord is with you, especially today.
What causes you distress today? Who might you call for help? Who is waiting for your call? Who needs to hear your assurance that God stays very close, today?

Lord Jesus, thank you that you are the Way, the Truth, and the Life. I believe your promise is true: “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5). Thank you for the comfort of your presence. Show me how to share your peace with others, today. Amen.
